Work in international organizations that are part of the UN (there are many and they are diverse, for example, UN jobs in Ethiopia), of course, attract many students, which is understandable, there is an opportunity to change the world or at least to travel.
What is needed
Active life position. Data on UN vacancies are publicly available, there are no secrets. For example, you can find them at a central site. Also, vacancies are posted on the sites of regional offices. But in order to get UN jobs in Ethiopia, you need to be noticed. And, therefore, you must constantly submit our resume to the announced positions.
Professionalism. Here is what should be written in the resume: experience, skills, competencies. You must submit an application, preferably in those areas where you feel the most. Attention is also paid to the applicant’s knowledge of the UN official languages, in this case, Russian-speaking participants have a priority – they already speak Russian and English. In addition, on the program in the learning process, they teach students the necessary professional skills. In addition, it is preferable that projects are being implemented, including joint projects with UN organizations. Students can always take part in them, which will also be an important step towards realizing the dream of working at the UN.
Patience. You should start small. It is clear that it is almost impossible to get a very high position without relevant experience. If there is not enough experience, then you should start with the intern positions in which experience will be actively gained. Students and graduates of different programs have been and are doing internships at the offices of organizations that are part of the UN (for example, in the FAO, UNDP). This experience is already useful for applying for open vacancies.
It is important to note that the applicant must still be prepared for difficulties (you never know where to go and what to do) and continuous improvement of yourself, regular training and professional development until the change of career paths.
There are internships at the UN and other international organizations, which anyone can apply for, subject to a number of conditions. Of course, this is an ideal command of English, and sometimes also another foreign language. A certain level of higher education is required in fields related to international relations, for this, you need to graduate the university that provides professional education in the sphere of international affairs.
In addition, the presence of publications, confirmed academic achievements (which is done quite easily and quickly if desired), as well as experience in volunteering, is required. But the most difficult thing is perhaps a motivational letter, which should be perfectly written in perfect English. If you have all the above-mentioned qualities, you will have no problem in starting your career in the UN.
